Looking Back
-LUKE 9:59-60 (Gospel – The Cost of following Jesus), “To another he said,’follow me.’ But he said,’Lord, let me first go and bury my father.’ And Jesus said to him,’Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’”
—- Sometimes we aren’t/more likely don’t feel ready to take on what the Lord is asking us to do. We are more likely to respond with, “I need to do this first; Oh, after I get here Lord.”
—-I myself am guilty of this. For me it’s the steps to get baptized. It may sound silly to some, because it also sounds silly to by self.
___I am guilty of saying; “I’m not ready; I haven’t changed enough; I haven’t done enough; After I get here in my path, I will”
—-I know these thoughts/feelings aren’t from the Holy Spirit, they are feeling of flesh, thoughts put their to hold me back on my path.
(Demolish the Strong Holds!) – strong-holds refers to fortified negative thought patterns or lies that keep us from God’s truth
-2 CORINTHIANS 10:3-5, for though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.
(Spiritual Warfare) – the struggle with thoughts is part of a spiritual battle, not just a human one.
—-taking thoughts captive, 2 CORINTHIANS 10:5, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself fun against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
___it gives us clear instruction to actively “take captive every thought” that goes against the knowledge of God and bring it under the control of Christ.
-ROMANS 12:2, “Do Not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God…
—-part of fighting spiritual warfare is breaking the strongholds, demolishing the thoughts that have been holding us hostage.
-LUKE 9:61-62 (Gospels – The cost of following Jesus), “Yet another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord, but let me fist say farewell to those at my home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts his hands to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
—-have you ever caught yourself saying, “oh, but first….!” “Lord, I’d love for you to do this in my life, oh but wait! I need to do this first!”?
—-“No one who puts his hands on the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Read that back a few times through. What is your take away?
___For me.. its that when we take the steps, moving towards God, we often look back to things we miss, wanted, desire. The things that no longer fit the path we are on.
—Our Hearts are divided on the wants of the flesh, and the Journey we are on with God.
-ROMANS 8:5-6 – For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit set their minds on things of the spirit. For to set the mind on flesh is death, but to set the mind on the spirit is life and peace.
—-many of us live divided in our hearts between flesh and Spirit.
—- Pastor Devin Webb, “we want out spirit la carne!” (La carne = the meat)
-GALATIONS 5:17 – For desires of the flesh are against the spirit, and the desires of the spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other
—- for we can’t have la carne, if we follow the spirit and look back in want of the flesh, we are not ready for the responsibilities of God’s kingdom.
-LUKE 9:61-62 (Meaning) – metaphor of plowing the field to explain that once a person commits to following Jesus, they must be completely devoted to the task.
** Because of this Deep dive, working through it and taking a deeper look, I broke that stronghold and got baptized on December 7th 2025
_____we all get to the places we need to be by trusting in God. Follow the spirt NOT the flesh.
